Read articlePain, pressure and muffled hearing. How to tell outer, middle and inner ear infections apart — and what to do.
Ear infections are common - especially in children - and most clear up well with the right care. They're grouped by where they occur, and the type affects both the symptoms and the treatment.
Knowing which is which helps you decide whether home care will do or it's time to see a professional.
| Type | Where | Typical signs |
|---|---|---|
| Outer ear (otitis externa) | The ear canal | Itch, pain when touched, discharge |
| Middle ear (otitis media) | Behind the eardrum | Pain, pressure, muffled hearing, fever |
| Inner ear | Deep inner ear | Dizziness, balance issues, nausea |
Most infections settle, but certain signs mean professional care is needed.

Most mild ear infections settle within a few days. While they do, keep the ear dry, avoid swimming, and never insert cotton buds or drops unless advised - poking an inflamed ear almost always makes it worse. Simple pain relief and a warm compress can ease discomfort.
If symptoms are severe, spreading, or last more than a few days - or there's discharge, high fever or hearing loss - it's time to be seen rather than waiting it out.
